school, he received his first patent for the rotary motor that he invented at age 15. He also invented the
air brake (a breakthrough for the railroad industry), and he invented a way to control AC (alternating

- Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel prizes, was born in 1833.
Inventor of dynamite, he made a fortune selling explosives. His will established a fund for Nobel prize
awards given each year for the most important work in 7 categories: physics, chemistry, physiology, medicine,
literature, peace and (as of 1969) economics. The prize winner receives a gold medal, a diploma, and prize

- Cuban Missile Crisis begins in 1962. President John F. Kennedy
announced the discovery of Soviet Union nuclear missile bases in Cuba. Tense days of political posturing led
